ABOUT RECYCLING

Reprocessing scrap or used plastic into useful products or material

Step 1: Sort the material

The process of recycling plastic is fairly complex. The first step is to sort the types of plastic by establishing whether it is clean or dirty, the type of resin, the colour and the additives in the plastic.

Step 2: Shred the plastic

The plastic is then either sent through a granulator or shredder where it is cut down to smaller pieces.

Step 3: Wash and re-granulate

These pieces are then washed and separated again in a sink-or-float system, after which they are either granulated again or melted and sent through a pelletiser to recreate the resin.
These days, most plastic items items can be recycled: plastic bottles, bags, packaging, tyres, pipes and more.
